Flexible endoscopy involves use of a flexible tube with a light source and video camera, inserted into the gastro intestinal tract, to view problems with the digestive tract, remove gastric foreign objects, and perform biopsies. This procedure is a less invasive alternative to surgery for those applications and recovery time is much shorter than surgery.
Potential indications for endoscopy include:
- Gastric foreign body
- Chronic vomiting
- Esophageal disease
- Chronic diarrhea
Endoscopy is typically recommended for chronic gastrointestinal disease when other diagnostics have failed to determine the cause and the patient is not responsive to trial treatments of gastrointestinal drugs and special diets.
